As you know, we are expecting a grueling winter this year. For Albertans, the cold temperatures of winter can cause serious damage to your home or business if you are not mindful of the most commonly overlooked causes of water damages in winter. Every year Alliance Restorations records hundreds of emergency phone calls from property owners with water damage. Often people haven’t taken the necessary steps to inspect pipes or repair damaged rooftops.
Here’s what to do:
Prevent pipes from bursting
– Insulate (both hot and cold) water pipes with heat tape or other insulators. Make sure to insulate the areas where the water supply lines are located.
– Open kitchen cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipe system.
– When leaving the home, set the temperature no lower than 50° F and shut off the master valve to the home.
Prevent ice dams
Ice dams form at the edges of the roof when the heat in the attic causes snow on the roof to melt, which in turn refreezes at the gutters. Heavy snow on roofs can cause ice dams and structural damage to the roof.
-The key to preventing damage is to inspect and clean the gutters and downspouts to allow melted snow to properly flow through the drain system.
-Keep the temperature in the attic 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature by providing insulation and ventilation in your attic.
-Remember to remove the snow from the roof when its at least 6 inches deep.
